Chetnole
v Wincanton Away 29 April 07
Another
glorious afternoon greeted a depleted Chetnole as they visited last years
Division one relegatees Wincanton. The absence of James and Alex
Healey was always going to leave a big hole, but Chetnole responded with true grit. Winning the toss, Captain Stan Kemp
opted to bat, fearful of spending the afternoon chasing leather in the
blazing sun as memories of last seasons purgatory at White Horse haunted
him. He and Dai Maude were a steady pairing blunting the opening attack, and
an opening stand of 37 off 16 overs was a sound return in the context of the
game. This set things up nicely for the middle order, with substantial
contribution from Stuart Beasley and Steve Bown. A well crafted 17 n.o
from the determined Neil Spearing formed the backbone of a respectable 142
for 9 off 40 overs.
Chetnole's
quiet confidence proved unfounded as the only predicable aspect of an
unpredictable track was that it would become predictable, and so it
proved. Wincanton opener D
Legg making an impressive 49 before holing out.
Interest was maintained for Chetnole as Neil Spearing and Steve
Bown again bowled with fire, and Stan nipped in with 3 wickets but
couldn’t prevent Wincanton from cantering home with 3 wickets to spare.
