Chetnole
v Thornford Away Friendly 6 May 07
Two games and two
defeats spurred selectors Bob Healey and Neil Spearing to put a strong
team out for the traditional early season friendly with local rivals
Thornford. With a gloomy weather
forecast the afternoon, although overcast, was mild and thankfully less
damp than feared.
With plenty of grass to encourage the bowlers, on
winning the toss, Captain Stan Kemp opted to bowl, opening with Steve Bown
and James Healey, followed by the rest of the team getting some overs
under their belts early in the season. Alex Healey, Bob Healey, Robin
Barker, Kevin Johnson, and Andy Spearing all stretched varying ages of
muscles with Bob particularly worthy of mention for a tight 6 over spell.
After drinks Neil Spearing was unleashed and with the bowlers at the other
end keeping things tight, Thornford did well to reach 121 for 9. The
bowling was supprted by some superb fielding from Mark Spearing and a
cameo performance with the gloves by the Stuart Beasley.
A gorgeous tea, as always at
Thornford, clearly agreed with openers Mark Spearing and Alex Healey as
they
set about the Thornford attack with gusto, romping to 60 before Mark fell
to an extravagant drive which found the outside edge.
This only served to clear the way for Stuart Beasley to take up the
baton as
he scored 20 from an over, and with Alex Healey joining him saw
Chetnole home in 19 overs. A
fine performance and spirits were high as plans were made in the clubhouse
afterwards for the forthcoming tour.
